"Backline looks like a boyband" concerns following influx of young talent

Grosvenor 3s, despite winning against Malone 4s, lost the game on appeal,on a technical error, so this game was a crunch tie for Sam Grant's men. In order to produce 3 sides on any given Saturday, a lot of work is needed by the 3s Manager. Sam has done a great job in ensuring that the 3s turn out full squads when needed. Today there was a mixture of youth and experience turning out for Grosvenor with Club stalwarts, Jamie White, Craig Steele, Lyle McFarland and David Montgomery joining a bevy of flyers who stretched a heavy Service 2s to the limit. Grosvenor attacked from the off and only overexuberance held the visitors back from early scores. Service had the early opportunity to open the scoring but their outhalf scuffed a fairly easy penalty. Grosvenor still lacked patience and bad handling  and poor decision making, kept the game scoreless. Eventually Craig Steele forced his way over for an unconverted try 5-0.  Further pressure allowed Lyle McFarland to score adjacent to the posts for a try which was converted by skipper, Sam Grant 12-0. The score was extended when Jamie White also scored for Sam Grant to add the extras. 19-0. This was the score at halftime.
Playing  with the slope, could Service exert more pressure on a resolute Grosvenor defence?  Well, the second half was all Grosvenor and tries were scored by Jack Patterson, Neil Stewart, Dee Montgomery and Ethan Fitzsimmons. All four were converted by Sam Grant to bring his kicking tally to 6/7.
This was a game where Grosvenor were never threatened and its hard to criticise a 7 try rout. Credit must be given to a Service side who included former Grosvenor legend Gareth Bond in their ranks. They never gave up and we thank them for their hospitality post match.
The inaugural 3rd XV Stein trophy for MOM was presented to Lyle McFarland , who had an outstanding game both in the tight and in defence, as well as scoring a well deserved try.
